Birdwatching.co.uk is created by the same editorial team that has produced Bird Watching, the UK's best-selling bird magazine, for the past 38 years.
Our goal has always been to provide birdwatchers of all ages, abilities and levels of experience with everything they need to enjoy the hobby to the maximum, from expert tips and advice, to in-depth analysis of the science behind the big conservation and birdwatching issues of the day, and from the latest sightings of rare and scarce birds, to the best places to find your own exceptional sightings.
Who's behind the site
Our team is led by editor Matt Merritt and assistant editor Mike Weedon, who are both lifelong birders. Matt is particularly interested in the cultural and artistic aspects of birdwatching and ornithology, while Mike is an absolutely dedicated patch-watcher around his home in Peterborough, who over more than 20 years has recorded a remarkable amount of birding data that shines a light on changing bird populations.
Among our regular feature writers are some of the biggest names in British nature writing, such as Dominic Couzens, record-breaking birders such as Ruth Miller, and familiar faces from TV nature programmes, such as the Urban Birder David Lindo.
Our travel features take in a wide range of great birding destinations all over the world, with writers including well-known names such as Stephen Moss.
Gear reviews are led by David Chandler (with help from Matt and Mike), who has many years of experience in testing binoculars and spotting scopes, as well as being an experienced birder and naturalist. We always test products honestly and without prejudice, and in an era when (in the optics world), there are very few poor products on the market, we aim to tell the reader why they might want that particular product. Remember, too, that the birdwatching optics market is a slow-moving one – most of our archived reviews are of products that are either still available, or that you will still find on sale secondhand in excellent condition.

Do we make affiliate commission?
We work with a variety of affiliate partnerships and we may receive a commission for purchases made through our links. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
How does this impact our gear testing?
Our affiliate partnerships do not impact the product choices we make or the reviews we write. There is no pressure on our editorial team to choose particular products or brands; we won’t recommend a product we don’t believe in. The products will speak for themselves when you invest in them.
